(I will, for sanity and security, leave details out of this entry)
at a club called yellow we celebrated Halloween on Saturday(thank goodness there were no yellow fetishes on display though, supposedly, there was a bit of the BROWNEST of fetishes on display in the private show that went on before we arrived..sadly we missed all of that).
the whole night was rather strange in that: at about 1, which is JUST the beginning of a night in Tokyo, I got ill. I was suddenly incredibly faint, nauseous, and generally weak. I had to sit down and it was a little scary. The worst part? No alcohol to blame. Totally coherent, unaltered by any substance, good old-fashioned sick. ACTUALLY--the worst part of any night out in Tokyo is that you are STUCK. You cannot go home till the trains start running again at 5:30 or 6.

I was stuck. Luckily I had been invited by a dear friend, Dan the dj or DANTE, and his girlfriend Meiko or Meichan as I call her. Dan and Meiko are, perhaps, the most considerate people to party with--they got me water all night long and sat with me until I demanded they go and "goddamnit enjoy."
Finally--after bottles of water and an hour or two of sitting and talking to the drugged/drunk Japanese men who MIGHT have been hitting on me..and after a few words with the Japanese women who probably were but were too shy to string together more than 2 words in their mothertongue... Finally I was up to dancing and we did and it was great.
Ive never been a fan of house or techno but, in Japan, I have been to several rather impressive clubs with Dan that have managed to provide me with a hugely entertaining time--no doubt the company helped..but...the music is growing on me.
Dan has, the last few times we've gone...gotten us onto guest lists and into shorter lines, gotten us free drinks and things.. well...fun has been had.
There was a moment that night that I will remember forever because it was SOMEWHAT fantastical and dreamlike--though I doubt Dan and Meiko noticed; suddenly there was a space on the dance floor around me and the spot light was trained solely on me--and suddenly 10 people were circling me--imitating me--attempting something like a line dance... it was both flattering and... scary. It helps that I am both utterly foreign and a snazzy dresser. sometimes.
the night ended early because of a rather explosive fight on the street between a black american and a japanese gangster...words and POSSIBLY a blow or two were exchange, nothing serious, but we were all forced to ascend an hour early nontheless.
on Thursday I am planning to attend indie/electro night at Shibuya's famous Ruby Room: my first rock themed dance night in Japan and that is both exciting..and...
what is the word for...well..a fear of being massively underwhelmed by something? I have no greater fear than to see Japan's rock scene and find it totally...blasse. blasse? i dunno..perhaps blasphemous at least.
you should SEE their take on SOME of our scenes. scandalous and sometimes awful..sometimes beautiful. Japan does hippie better than america ever did...sad that its so rare.
anyway. things are well on this side of the world--are things well on yours?
p.s. i forgot to mention the craziest costumes of the evening..so..a brief rundown, pun intended:
6 men in thongs and pantyhose--my favorite of whom had obviously worn them underneath his work clothes..., 4 or 5 people in full rubber suits (yay for zippers), a REAL PARTY MONSTER (evan--you would have loved him--ohmygodishewearinginflatablechairs as shoulderpads), several gothic lollys, maids maids and maids, so many goth but not the japanese take on it which is somehow more cinematic and less tragic (not in the way it is meant to be--no, the other tragic), and people with movie quality makeup--horns, scars, burns and brow ridges to make a trekkie jealous. i had one specimen in particular with blonde hair, no eyebrows, leather pants and the craaaziest makeup.following me around for about an hour. go ahead and be jealous of my goth lover. okay?
anyway. pictures should have been taken.
